PETITION TO DENY PAROLE  2ND HEARING

New York State Division of Parole

RE: PAROLE HEARING FOR SALVATORE DESARNO – DIN#81A-1798 NYSID#4075158Q

To The Parole Board:

A second parole hearing is scheduled for early November, 2006 for Salvatore Desarno who murdered New York City Police Officer Cecil Frank Sledge from the 69th precinct on January 28, 1980. On that date, Officer Sledge was on solo patrol when he stopped Salvatore Desarno who was on parole and wanted for questioning in a robbery.  As Officer Sledge approached Salvatore Desarno’s vehicle, Salvatore Desarno shot Officer Sledge and then accelerated his vehicle, hitting and then dragging Officer Sledge to his death.

Officer Sledge was 35 years old, a twelve-year veteran of the New York City Police Department, was a husband and a father of a three-year-old son, and a nine-month-old daughter. Because of Salvatore Desarno, he left a wife without a husband and two children without a father.

The parole of Salvatore Desarno would be a grave injustice to Police Officer Sledge, his family, as well as society. The murder of a police officer is a serious crime that demands justice.  We must reinforce in the minds of criminals that such heinous crimes on our police will be met with the harshest punishment, life in prison.

Additionally and more importantly, at the time of Police Officer Sledge’s murder, Salvatore Desarno was released from prison and on parole.  This haunting fact speaks volumes in and of itself about Salvatore Desarno’s eligibility for parole.

The undersigned petitions members of the Board to deny parole for Salvatore Desarno.

Respectfully,
